NSW school zone rules updated

To improve pedestrian and driver safety around school zones, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) have added seven new traffic infringements to their list of finable offences within school zones.

“The safety of our children is paramount, which is why we worked with a number of organisations to review parking penalties,” said Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey.

The changes to legislation will include the loss of two demerit points and a fine of up to $439 for the following parking infringements when they happen inside of a school zone.

  1. Stopping in an intersection
  2. Stop within 20m of an intersection (traffic lights)
  3. Stop within 10m of an intersection (no traffic lights)
  4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights
  5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway
  6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel
  7. Parallel park close to dividing line
