Real world challenge at Caringbah

Following on from their successful Quberider space project in 2016, De La Salle College Caringbah is continuing to provide innovative, authentic learning experiences.

With a grant from Innovate Now, the Years 7-10 boys’ college has launched INNOV8_NOW@DeLa. The project aims to build strong relationships between the school and a range of industry partners, with a focus on developing Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics, otherwise know as STE(A)M, and other 21st century skills.

Their first industry partner, Severn Graphics, is a company that specialises in designing and producing retail displays. Ryan Severn, who just happens to be a former student at De La Salle, offered his shopfront as a place for students to display their creative work. ‘Anzac Day’ was the theme for students during April, with Tom Whitehill and Vann Grills from Year 7 and Nick Claridge from Year 10 producing outstanding creative artworks.

Tom described the benefits of the project: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to move out of my comfort zone to collaborate on an artwork, something which I would usually work on by myself.”

“It was great to be able to learn from Tom’s strengths, but also to share the things that I do well with him,” said Vann. “Mum and Dad were also really proud to drive past the shop and see my work on display.”

Creative and Performing Arts Coordinator Natalie McCaffrey, said the College is providing the students with an authentic, innovative, and engaging experience in education to better prepare them for the reality of the workforce and post-school opportunities.

“In Visual Arts, we are creating community partnerships and collaborating with practicing artists all of the time, so being involved in the iNNOV8 Severn project allows us to create and exhibit work for a real audience, with purpose. The students are excited to take their work beyond the confines of the classroom and into the community.”

Erin Rogers, who leads e-Learning at the College, said the next goal for the project was to have students work at creating a new website for the business as part of our Multimedia course.

“Eventually, we hope to embed work placements and careers information, along with industry-related classroom learning experiences, so that students will develop the skills which will be of crucial importance for the careers of the future.”
