Marcellin College Randwick was ranked the top school in the senior boys’ division at the Sydney Schools Regional Surfing Titles 2017 – South held at Maroubra Beach on 18 and 19 May.
A total of 11 boys made up Marcellin’s junior and senior teams, which they had qualified for after competing in the College Surf Competition.
Marcellin College surfing coordinator Peta Bourke said on the first day of the event, the junior boys were up against nine other schools in perfect, off-shore conditions.
“Our junior boys surfed well and made the most of the three to four foot sets but they were knocked out before the quarter finals.”
On day two of the event, the senior boys had messy, on-shore conditions in rain and were pitting their skills against surfers from 11 other schools. Ms Bourke said the final was tense with the four surfers all exchanging high scoring waves.
“Our senior team surfed so well, milked every wave and impressed the judges with both Zac Michael and Zane Killorn both making the semi-finals with Zac earning a spot in the final,” she said.
“In the end two points separated first and fourth place and Zac Michael came third overall.”
Marcellin College was the top ranked school at the end of the senior boys’ event, qualifying Zac Michael and Zane Killorn to compete in the State Titles in Port Macquarie in the MR team.
“I am very proud of the way the boys represented the College and I am looking forward to further developing our Surfing Team in preparation for the next event,” Ms Bourke said.
