De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla Year 12 graduate Stephanie Hession’s work will be displayed at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery’s ARTEXPRESS exhibition until March 26. Her series of vivid drawings, Cultural Overload, were sketched during a school trip to Italy and chosen for the showcase of outstanding 2016 HSC Visual Arts major works.
De La Salle offers students transitioning from Year 10 at De La Salle Caringbah and Our Lady of Mercy College Burraneer a cultural immersion and pilgrimage experience in historic locations like Greece and Italy.
it was on this trip that Stephanie was inspired by the cultural richness of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the canals of Venice and the gardens of Ravello and Amalfi. She used watercolour, pencils and ballpoint pens to capture the experience on paper. Stephanie said she was inspired by the works of Piranesi and Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton to create a sense of wandering and fleeting impressions.
“It was a great opportunity to study art, history and religion overseas, and it certainly got me on track for my HSC artwork,” she said.
“Many artists have responded to their Italian grand tour and my practice follows that tradition. In my work I wanted to create the effect of richness, but also the exhaustion of gallery fatigue and cultural overload.”
