At Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary Fairfield Year 6 students have a special role in supporting the social skills of their young peers.
Year 6 students Veronica Crkovski and Mateo Arboleza are among the school’s ‘We Care leaders’, who help the younger children to develop social skills during play times and support children that might feel lonely and isolated.
There are six on duty each day in the playground at recess and lunch times. All Year 6 students share the responsibility with the school’s Mini Vinnies leaders. Year 5 students step in to help towards the end of the year.
“At lunch times and at recess they walk around and help students that are lonely,” Mr Rumora said. “They might help the Kindergarten students with some social skills and to develop game skills. They might take children to the office if they’re hurt. They’re basically roaming the playground. It’s a good leadership role.”
Mateo said he and fellow we care leaders help everyone who needs it. “We help anybody who has troubles,” he said.
“For example, Kindergarten come up to us and ask us questions and we try our best to help them.”
Questions might be about being lost or needing to make new friends. “It’s a good thing and it helps people,” said Veronica, 10.
