Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College Burwood students have excelled at the regional level of WorldSkills, an international trade skills competition for senior high school students.

The College hosted the competition on October 30, where students showcased their Certificate II course skills in front of industry judges including Burwood hair salon owner Jeanette Dalla Bona and hospitality trainer and chef George Carpinato.

Fellow industry judge, hair salon owner and SCCVC Learning Facilitator Leanne Connor said the competition allowed students to practice their skills in an authentic work environment. “Students were exposed to working on real-life tasks within commercial deadlines under the eye of industry professionals. I was impressed with how well the students performed. The students are working on developing these skills in their courses but the competition taught them how to apply these skills in a professional manner within deadline.”

Year 11 hairdressing student (now Year 12) Pia Roselli won a silver medal and classmate Anastasia Hampsas, a bronze medal. Amana Samrani also won bronze in the Business Services section of the competition. Pia said the competition had given her more confidence  in her ability to use the skills she had learnt in a pressured, real-life work environment. “It was really good to have the opportunity to compete with fellow students and be judged on our skills by industry professionals,” she said.

The College will participate in the next WorldSkills competition in 2017.
