New flags for NAIDOC

Waterloo_14_02_24_350The Catholic Education Office Sydney raised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags for the first time on July 6 to mark NAIDOC Week.

The annual event which celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples was marked at the end of June is schools in Sydney Archdiocese Schools including Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood, where Aboriginal students performed traditional dances at a school assembly.

The flags are a permanent addition to the poles outside the CEO’s Leichhardt headquarters. Staff prayed for the inclusion of all people at the ceremony, using the following words.

God of all people, your son Jesus was rejected and forced to leave his own land,

We ask you to give us strength to walk with all our brothers and sisters, willingness to work together and be reconciled,

And courage to listen with an open heart and mind so that our sacred land of Australia will be a place where everyone is welcomed, respected and celebrated.

We make this prayer in Jesus’ name.
